Do Not Disturb

Dealing with unsolicited loan offer calls can be distressing and poses a significant challenge. Some steps and information that might help address this issue:

1. Register for DND: Register your phone number with the National Do Not Call (DND) registry to block telemarketing calls. You can do this by calling 1909 or sending an SMS with the text ‘START 0’ to 1909.

2. Report to Authorities: If you receive such calls, report them to the nearest cyber cell or national helpline 1903. You can also file an online cybercrime complaint at the national cybercrime reporting portal.

3. Bank-Specific DND: Some banks offer their own DND services where you can fill out a form to stop receiving promotional calls and messages. Check the official websites of the banks for such forms.

4. Awareness and Vigilance: Be aware of the common tactics used by scammers and never share personal information like bank account numbers, card details, PINs, or OTPs with anyone.

5. Legal Recourse: If harassment continues, you can file a police complaint under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology Act (IT Act). Legal action can be taken against such fraudulent callers.

6. RBI and TRAI Guidelines: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have guidelines to protect consumers from unsolicited calls. Banks are not allowed to force loans or credit cards on customers, and if they do, customers can file a complaint with the bank’s customer care department.

7. Legislation and Government Action: The RBI has requested the government to create new legislation to help curb illegal lending and is expected to set up a central agency to verify loan apps.

It’s important to note that while these steps can help reduce the number of such calls and provide avenues for action against scammers, the effectiveness of these measures can vary, and continuous efforts from regulatory bodies, law enforcement, and public awareness are crucial in combating this issue. If you’ve been a victim of such scams, it’s essential to take immediate action and seek legal advice. Remember, no legitimate financial institution will ask for sensitive personal information over unsolicited calls or messages. Always verify the authenticity of any financial offers or requests through official channels before proceeding.
